Choosing a health tracker ring: fit, finish, cost and what it measures
Makers do not sell separate smart rings for men and for women, so the choice comes down to fit, finish, ongoing cost and what you want to track. Get the size right first, then compare what you pay after the ring and which readings you actually need.
Men or women: it is about your finger, not your gender
Searching for a smart ring for men or a smart ring for women can suggest two product lines. In the makers' pages we read, there are not. Oura lists one ring family in a range of finishes, and Ultrahuman lists one ring in sizes 5 to 14. What differs from person to person is finger size, how much metal you like to wear and what you want from the data.
1. Size first
A smart ring reads through your skin, so a bad fit means a bad experience. Oura advises choosing a size that slips over your knuckle but is not too loose at the base of your finger, and trying different fingers to find the most comfortable combination. Ultrahuman lists US sizes 5 to 14 with no half sizes, and a free sizing kit with an order. Zenlyf comes in US sizes 6 to 13.
Our step-by-step guide to finding your ring size at home covers the paper method and the knuckle test.
2. Finish and look
Oura's store page lists finishes including Silver, Black, Brushed Silver, Stealth, Gold and Deep Rose, and the price depends on the finish. If you wear other jewellery, match the metal tone. If you will wear it to the gym or the kitchen, a darker finish may hide wear better; that is our own opinion, not a test result. For Zenlyf's finishes and current availability, see the Zenlyf Ring page.
3. What you pay after you buy
Oura charges a membership of $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year on its US pricing, and says the ring and app work without it with much more limited insights. Ultrahuman says there are no recurring subscription fees for accessing your data. Zenlyf makes the ring's readings free and charges for the AI companion, WhatsApp assistant and Zenlyf Link in its Plus and Pro plans. The full comparison is in do you need a subscription for a smart ring.
4. What you want to track
Ask what you want the ring to do. For a general health tracker ring, the usual readings are heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep and activity. The Zenlyf Ring reads heart rate, oxygen, sleep, temperature and activity, and its app asks the ring for a reading about every 5 minutes. Pick a ring whose app shows you the readings in a way you will actually look at.
Be wary of any ring that promises to diagnose. These are wellness devices, and no ring replaces a doctor. For what to expect from the numbers, see our guides to heart rate, blood oxygen and sleep.
5. Where you live
Check the practical side too: can you pay in naira, how long does delivery take, and can you cancel if it does not fit? Zenlyf delivers free across Nigeria and lets you pay by card, bank transfer or USSD. Ultrahuman has a Nigeria buy page with prices in US dollars and a 30-night risk-free trial. We could not confirm Oura's delivery to Nigeria from its own pages, as covered in the Oura Ring in Nigeria.
Common questions
In the makers' pages we read, rings are sold in sizes and finishes for everyone, not as separate men's and women's products. Choose by size, comfort and finish.
Oura suggests trying different fingers and sizes to find the most comfortable combination. The size changes by finger, so decide the finger before you measure.
No. Smart rings are wellness devices. Talk to a doctor about any health concern.
